City of Sand Springs Animal Welfare Facility
The City of Sand Springs asked GH2 Architects to help develop marketing and educational materials for a bond
initiative for a new animal shelter. The new 10,000 square-foot facility will replace an existing 2,900 square-foot
building to provide ample space for cats, dogs, exotics, and livestock on site. The team designed the building with
animal welfare and Fear Free guidelines in mind. All dog kennels include indoor/outdoor runs, with close adjacency
to play space. All cat cages are oversized, with ample light and perching opportunities, including access to “catios”
for optimal sun-bathing. The circulation around the building is strategically designed to create designated staff-only spaces, volunteer spaces and areas accessible by the public.
