City of Houston Public Safety Mounted Patrol & K9 Unit Headquarters
Working closely with the mounted patrol and K9 officers, GH2 prepared Programming, Master Planning and Construction documents for this project in order to clearly define the project scope and budget for the City of Houston. The new facility includes extensive equine and K9 unit offices, roll call room, locker rooms, and support facilities, as well as housing and training facilities for both equine and K9 units.
Unique to this facility is a central drive-through trailer loading port which allows the loading and unloading of the patrol unit trailers within protection of weather or threat, well within the secure compound. The equine facilities are supported by a lighted and irrigated 100′ x 200′ arena with demonstration pavilions, 60′ diameter round pen, and six-acres of grass pasture. The runs and pastures feature 440-Fence, which is factory powder-coated for exceptional durability, and heated automatic waterers.
The K9 facility houses eight K9 units for training and temporary holding during roll call, as Houston K9 units live with their human partners full-time. This facility includes two grooming/vet care areas, climate-controlled food and training equipment storage, a covered vehicle cleaning area, and lighted outdoor training and break pens. The K9 building features masonry and chain link partitions, and both the west and east exterior walls are fully operable for excellent natural ventilation.
